Sgt Kevin Sweeney enlisted with the Michigan State Police on September 24, 2005. After completing the 113th Trooper Recruit School, he was assigned to the Newaygo Post as a road patrol officer. In 1999 Tpr Sweeney was temporarily assigned to the Training Academy where he was a Physical Fitness Instructor for the 118th Trooper Recruit School. Upon returning to the Newaygo Post in 2000, he was assigned as the Post Community Services Officer (PCSO) where his duties ranged from court officer, recruiter, TEAM instructor, and school liaison officer.

In 2004 Tpr Sweeney was promoted to Sgt at the Rockford Post where he served as a desk sergeant and supervisor. In 2006 Sgt Sweeney transferred to the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD). Sgt Sweeney has worked in the Homeland Security Section, Field Support Section, and the Communication and Information Services Section of EMHSD.

Sgt Sweeney's current duties are to assist with the Citizen Corps program, serves as the state wide Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) coordinator, state wide Community Emergency Response Team Coordinator (CERT), liaison to the Fire Corps, Neighborhood Watch, and Volunteers in Police Service programs, is the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Transit Grant coordinator, supervisors the Media Production Unit, sits on the Severe Weather Advisory Committee, chairs the Arab/Chaldean Disaster Preparedness committee, and serves on the Executive Council for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
